Why did we name our project "Makhota"?
The word "Makhota" or "Mukhauta" or "مکھوٹا" (meaning "mask") is an Urdu/Punjabi word originating from the Sanskrit language. Metaphorically representing deception or a facade.
The reasoning behind this name has 2 different sorts of perspectives, one more simple and notable right off the bat, and one that only makes sense if the full context of the movie is taken into consideration. Firstly, it's clear that since the antagonist is faceless and wears a mask, and the mask is also the sign or the indication that the antagonist has struck, something is clear, but more importantly, the second reason is the mask that the father is wearing. Not a real mask, but the fake persona he has, kicking his son out of the house, being strict with him, having that classical traditional thought process. At the end it is clear that it is all a mask. Since his care and love for his son show at the end when he rushes to go find his son. So the mask of him not caring and being stubborn is off, and at that point he would be willing to sacrifice anything just to make sure his son is safe and back home. But by the end he realizes he was too late.
The original argument between the names was either Niqaab or Makhota. Saad and Bilal both believed that "Niqaab" is a more commonly used word and would be understandable from the get-go, but that's something I was against. In my eyes, the word "Makhota" carries on the suspense and the different level of uniqueness that I want to originally carry out with the movie. We waited till the absolute last moment to decide the name as we believed with time one of the two sides would come to understand the reasoning behind the other, and that is exactly what happened. All three of us at the end realized that Makhota, with its more unique tone, would fit the movie a lot better than Niqaab.
